OrganicsBrasil Participates in Sustainability Debate

2008-09-03

The idea was to think about current sustainability issues and future challenges facing the Brazilian agro-industrial sector in regard to food production and consumption.

Isabela Gloger, OrganicsBrasil project coordinator, participated of the I Seminário do IPAS – Iniciativa Pró Alimento Sustentável (First Pro Sustainable Food Initiative Seminar - IPAS), in São Paulo, where cases on Bunge, Klabin, Carrefour, Nestlé, Sadia, and The Nature Conservancy were studied. The idea was to think about current sustainability actions and future challenges facing the Brazilian agro-industrial sector in regard to food production and consumption, in addition to identifying innovation trends.

IPAS aims at turning out innovation and visible and significant sustainable impact on the Brazilian agro-industrial sector, particularly in food production and consumption. It was founded in 2007, as an initiative of Sadia. Its founding members include OrganicsBrasil (trough IPD), Sadia, Bunge, Carrefour, Escola de Marketing Industrial, Klabin, Pensa USP, Sociedade Rural Brasileira, and the Nature Conservancy.

Isabela Gloger participated in the seminar as an IDP and OrganicsBrasil representative. According to her, it is important for the agro-industrial sector’s major companies to be aware and attuned to the sustainability debate, an important global issue. She emphasized that this is the focus of IPD’s actions and that OrganicsBrasil – proposed and managed by the Institute jointly with the Brazilian Exports Promotion Agency (APEX), and the Federation of Industries of Paraná (FIEP) – aims at providing support as a way of enhancing the industry and to promote and increase business opportunities for Brazilian certified organics exporting companies.

OrganicsBrasil is currently comprised of 64 member companies and, by the first semester of this year, it had already closed deals amounting to US$ 29.1 million. Certified organics growers, manufacturers, and processors find in OrganicsBrasil an important business channel with space in the major organics trade shows around the world, strategically showcasing the Brazilian trade production

The next trade show in OrganicsBrasil calendar is Biofach Tokio, in Japan, September 24-26. Member companies wishing to participate can contact us over the phone: (41) 3362-0200.
