2009-12-03

The fifth edition of the Volunteers’ Day promoted by Fiep’s Entrepreneurial Citizenship Council of Paraná is to take place on December 5. Registrations are already open.

Volunteers from Curitiba and metropolitan area will engage in several activities next Saturday (December 5) in favor of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). They will participate in the Volunteer’s Day (V-Day), an initiative of the Entrepreneurial Citizenship Council of Paraná (CPCE) created by Fiep. In his fifth edition, the event pays homage to volunteers and stimulates the engagement of more people in social actions. Registrations are open through CPCE’s site – www.fiepr.org.br/cpce/diav/.

Proposed by the UN in the year 2000 and ratified by 191 countries, the MDGs are socioeconomic goals targeting income, education, health, gender, and the environment. On V-Day, for each one of these goals a different action will be taken. Volunteers will get together at Asilo São Vicente de Paulo, at 8:30 am and will leave together for the venues where the activities will take place.

In response to Objective 1 (eradicating extreme poverty and hunger), lunch will be served for 20 children from the Batalhão da Última Hora Reintegration Center – Casa II, in Piraquara.

As for Objective 2, targeting education, the CPCE, the Alfred Kaefer Institute, College Unibrasil and the Federal Technological University of Paraná (UTFPR) will carry out a campaign to collect children’s books until the 30th. Donations will be accepted at any Super DIP or the colleges. The books donated will be given to the Franciscan Sisters Community Center at Vila das Torres and will become part of their library.

As for Objective 4 (reduce child mortality) there will be recreational activities with children in the Pequeno Principe Hospital. In support of maternal health improvement (Objective 5), there will be a campaign to collect dry goods, milk, baby clothes and personal hygiene products that will be given to HIV-positive mothers-to-be that participate in the Mãe Curitibana mother’s program.

The volunteers will also visit children who suffer from cancer and will conduct activities with the elderly at Recanto Tarumã including a visit to upkeep the fruit and vegetable gardens and pine trees planted during V-Day in 2008 on the margins of the Passaúna River, and will post identification signs on native trees at Passeio Público.

The 8 Millennium Development Goals are :

Objective 1 – Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Objective 2 – Achieve universal primary education
Objective 3 – Promote gender equality and empower women
Objective 4 – Reduce child mortality

Objective 5 – Improve maternal health
Objective 6 – Combat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and other diseases
Objective 7 – Ensure environmental sustainability/Quality of life and respect for the environment
Objective 8 – Develop a global partnership for development
