Humanizing Organizations is the Theme of Cultural Biology Certification Program

2009-09-17

A new opportunity to participate in the second edition of the certification program in Brazil. The course is offered by Unindus in partnership with the Development Promotion Institute – IPD.

Fiep - Federation of Industries of Paraná System through Unindus – University of the Industry in partnership with IPD - Development Promotion Institute is open for registrations until November 4 for the second edition of the Cultural Biology Certification course to be held in São Paulo city. The first edition is happening right now at Unindus, in Curitiba.

A partnership with the Matriztico Institute from Santiago, Chile, the program is taught by Humberto Maturana and Ximena D´Ávila, famous worldwide for developing and disseminating the Autopoiesis theory that gave rise to Cultural Biology and the certification program. Classes start on November 5, at the Mercure Grand Hotel São Paulo Ibirapuera. The certification course takes three years to be completed. Three 40-hour classes are taught every year. These meetings are supplemented by 108 hours of distance learning. Three lines of work are developed in the course: investigation of new biological and cultural knowledge, and social practice. Other supplementary learning opportunities such as conferences, seminars, workshops, and guided technical visits complete the package, as well as extension projects in partnership with universities, schools, businesses, and communities.

Cultural Biology focuses on human development and sees business companies as a living organisms consisting of people. According to Unindus’s director Henrique Ricardo dos Santos, the course is specially geared to the industrial community trusting that business leaders will humanize their organizations and improve their productivity. “The biggest challenge is how to manage technology and individuals at the same time. The program provides the necessary input for that to happen”, he says.

For Rosângela Percicotti from Volvo Brasil/Curitiba, the course is a unique experience because it leads to reflection on the role of individuals in the organization. “It is a shift of paradigm. Professionally speaking, it is a gradual awareness change and when I realize that individuals in the organization are diverse living beings I learn to respect them, to understand them as they are”, she explains.

According to Maturana, Cultural Biology joins two lines of thought: biological concern and social context. “It is the unification of the biological and mechanical processes. Machines do not work without living beings”, he says. His Autopoiesis theory has greatly influenced the understanding of living systems, the role of communication and language in the evolution of humans and their impact on organizational life, in social interaction, and in the biology of knowledge.
